I suppose that I’ve always tried to be curious about others, and not judgmental. I love bringing people together and learning from everyone around me.Beth Cougler Blom
If you could be remembered for one thing, what would it be? I would hope to be remembered mostly for co-raising (with my husband) our daughter to grow up to be a kind, confident, generous, curious, intelligent and community-minded individual.
What book do you recommend most to others? Well I don’t have a favourite book of all time but I recently read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and absolutely loved it. It’s whimsical, magical and “story-full”. It’s kind of one of those “imagine the possibilities…” sort of books.
Your thoughts on community and connection? I think that rewarding lives are built on community and connection, and one of the things I most cherish about my connections is that they are age diverse. Someone once told me that they appreciated my curiosity about other people and I suppose that I’ve always tried to be curious about others, and not judgmental. I love bringing people together and learning from everyone around me. I hope that I contribute to everyone else’s learning and feelings of connection as well.
Who has had the biggest impact on your life, and why? My parents have likely had the biggest impact on my life and I feel extremely fortunate to be born to two amazing people – best friends of each other – who role modelled for me what being in community looked like. It didn’t hurt that I have a huge extended family, we couldn’t help being in community! Overall my parents have shown me, through the way they are in the world, how to be an authentic person and a lifelong learner. Along with my brother, the four of us are change and challenge-seekers. I couldn’t have been given a better start in life.
Do you follow your heart or your head? I think I follow both! The people that really know me know that I’m a sensitive soul, and empathy comes easily to me. Yet I have business training, always an eye on the future, and am a really organized person. In my chosen field of education I get a chance to be both creative and structured so I suppose I have created a career for myself in which I get the best of both worlds.
